“The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities; but to know someone who thinks & feels with us, & who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I am an avid reader, but I also watch a lot of movies. They both can be used to create meaningful community, allowing opportunities to gather together.
A book club (aka a Literature Community) requires a commitment that many feel they cannot give. In my stage of life, I am busy, my husband is busy and my kids get busier by the day. A constant conversation I have with friends becomes more of a lament; we want to be together more, but we feel so many pulls on our time and energy (mental and physical) that the best description we can muster about our lives is “stress-paralyzed” (another great movie*).
This is my easy go-to option for lit community — hosting bookish movie nights. Simple planning {send an e-mail, send some texts}, pick a day {even last minute}, choose a movie + themed food from the movie {this is where I love to help!} + hot drink = a lovely, refreshing gathering.
My bookish movie write-ups will:
- be based on books or be “literature-infused”
- reflect the current season {this may be a matter of interpretation, but I love seasonal themes ;-)}
- include theme-food options connected to the movie
- give my thoughts on why I love the movie and why you should consider it
- include “Extra Threads” — links to books, movies, articles, other items of interest
These nights have blessed me and are one of favorite gatherings. Community matters oh so much, and story has power to change us and connect us to others.
Thanks for reading,
Stephanie
