“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.”
― Laura Ingalls Wilder
Ah, how right Laura is.
In the midst of our modern world with its phones and cars and everlasting schedules, old-fashioned things can be just what we need to slow us down and remind us…
~ to breathe,
~ to take a walk around the block instead of turning on a show or checking Instagram again,
~ to sit outside in the sunshine for a few minutes (even if we have to do it bundled in our winter coats),
~ to open up a book that takes us back in time,
~ to share a story with our kids.
In the midst of the February doldrums, old-fashioned meanderings might be just what we need to help us see beyond our own cold, wintry days.
February 7th marked Laura Ingalls Wilder’s 153rd birthday ;-). Celebrate this month by pulling out one of her books and reading it aloud with your kids.

- Learn what it’s like to live in a dugout home in On The Banks of Plum Creek.
- Be amazed by all the work Ma did each day and be thankful for your modern appliances after spending time in Little House in the Big Woods.
- Enjoy Laura’s teen years and her love of town events in Little Town on the Prairie.
- (However, we would recommend saving The Long Winter to read when it is a bit warmer and sunnier ;-))
- Settle in on a dark evening and watch some of the classic episodes from the television show. Some of my personal favorites are Bunny, (Season 3, Episode 3), The Campout (Season 2, Episode 9), and of course, Back to School, (Season 6, Episodes 1 & 2) when Laura first meets Almanzo.
We also have a Literature Kit in the Shop for On the Banks of Plum Creek if you’d like to host a book club gathering or you simply want to use it in your family to have conversation, cook, and do activities together.
We hope you enjoy a trip back in time with the Ingalls family sometime soon!
In the hope of threading stories, threading lives,
Tina
